Bears and Other Nice Things - UPDATE May 7, 2016
Honey memorial photoLast night at 9:03 PM, Eli came and was his usual timid self until he knew what I was about.
At the Bear Center, Holly and Lucky might be starting to have warm feelings, although it seems a little early.
Ted sittingThe word is out that we can now see Ted at nighttime using the link for Honey's cam. A Lily Fan said, “So nice to be able to see Ted at night! He was just lying on his back, all paws up and looking up into the trees!!! Rolled over and sleeping now.”
I might have seen a miracle today. The sky was blue except for a few small high clouds. The wind on Woods Lake was from the west, but the high clouds were moving south. Temperature 61°F AND SNOWING.
Miracles are good, but what made today nice was good words.
Honey memorial photo cropped tightA Lily Fan at the Bear Center this morning was enthusiastic. A group of students came all the way from southern Minnesota.
I learned that on Pinterest someone posted the nicest bunch of pictures (46 of them) and words giving the history on our research and showing how we have interacted with bears to learn what we learn https://www.pinterest.com/moravec0011/wildlife-research-institute-ely-mn/.
I spent the day seeing more of what we’ve learned as I reviewed video for use in my PowerPoint presentations at the International Bear Conference on Bear Language and Walking With Bears.
Pine siskinA Lily Fan said nice words about the 2016 calendar that has the pictures and words about Honey. She said:
“OH I GOT MY CALENDAR TODAY!! I cannot believe it! The quality of the photos are OUTSTANDING.... I am so glad I got it. There are back stories on each of the 4 bears there. I was real excited to read that. Being fairly new I didn't know. Just bits and pieces I have picked up. And I had forgotten some. The Calendar is packed to keep it from bending. I am really pleased. Seriously.. the photos could be framed and you would never think it was a Calendar photo. It's that good. I wouldn't mess around and let them get gone it you want one. (-; heart emoticon)”
I know how much work and dedication went into that calendar between Jim Stroner’s photography and Linda Gibson’s design. I hope Jim sees this update.
Ted swimmingAnd finally, reporter Angie Riebe of the Mesabi Daily News wrote another of her blockbuster articles a nice photo and great words about Honey. The paper covers the iron range. Angie always does a super job http://www.virginiamn.com/news/local/queen-of-the-pond/article_cde616a8-132d-11e6-a405-6bee6e555804.html.
Related to that, Linda Gibson used one of Jim Stroner’s pictures of Honey and a heavenly forest background to create a beautiful picture honoring her memory. The whole picture looks wonderful at 30x40 inches, and it looks good cropped so Honey is a bigger part of it.
Eastern chipmunkChances to educate the public are bubbling up with two production companies offering ideas for TV programs if I can spare the time while putting together the talks for Alaska. Scrambling.
Out the window, an eastern chipmunk was filling its cheeks in such good light I had to click the camera. Yesterday, it was the same story when a pine siskin was looking straight at me as it shelled a sunflower.
A great day.
Thank you for all you do.
