Bears, Birds, and PBS - UPDATE October 3, 2015

Kurtis and friendKurtis and friendOne of the three motherless cubs spotted in the community has received excellent care thanks to people with hearts. They named him Kurtis. He looks extra big for a cub because he has his winter coat and is in the foreground (on the right). About 2 weeks ago, he formed an alliance with a larger male that is next to him. They are as inseparable as Holly and Lucky. I wish we could know if they den together. That would be new information. As tight as they are, it seems likely. We’ll see if they’re still together in the spring.

American PipitAmerican PipitAmerican pipits continue to stream in and are either tame, tired, or hungry after travels of 800 to 1,800 miles. The one pictured looked up quizzically and continued foraging.

Chipmunks are filling their cheeks and burrows for winter.

ChickadeeChickadeeA flock of black-capped chickadees has arrived and we want to see if it is just a flock passing through or if this is the winter flock that has several members that readily land on a hand.

Yellow rumped warblersYellow rumped warblerYellow-rumped warblers, mostly juveniles, are passing through in large numbers.

Deer are changing to their winter coat.

Donna’s flowers at the Bear Center are spectacular, especially just after dawn.

A sharp Lily Fan sent a link to the intriguing PBS program “E. O. Wilson: Of Ants and Men” that I mentioned a couple days ago http://video.pbs.org/video/2365572374/.

Thank you for continuing to help the bears with food fund contributions.
