Quiet Day - UPDATE September 25, 2014
Cute cub showing footIt was a quiet day of reviewing pictures for use in the Northwoods Ecology Hall and Hope Learning Center.
Our friend Doug Hajicek, Producer of the Monster Quest TV Series that has been airing on History Channel these last couple days is going to print the big 11-foot square sign for the end of the Bear Center building closest to Highway 169.
Bear in a beautiful setting We heard today that longtime bear biologist Will Troyer died at the age of 89 http://www.adn.com/article/20140923/ alaskas-original-grizzly-wrangling- scientist-dead-89.
He and Lynn shared a love of bears and nature and were bear-viewing guides for Katmai Coastal Bear Tours a few years back
Grizzly mom with cub http://www.katmaibears.com /guides.htm. Lynn remembers looking at bear pictures at Will’s house in Alaska and listening to bear stories over lunch at a small restaurant. Thinking of Will makes Lynn want to get back to Katmai National Park for a week or two aboard one of the Katmai Coastal Bear Tour boats and lead bear-viewers on bear adventures—always fun, mesmerizing, and a chance for fresh brown bear video for the Bear Center. Maybe sometime in the next couple years. What makes Katmai bears special is that many of them are used to people. The big males tend to be the most cautious, so mothers often nurse their cubs near bear-viewing groups where the big males don’t dare go. Lynn and his groups have felt great excitement but have never felt threatened around these big bears that just go about their business.
