About the course:
The course offers daily up-close observation of wild black bears to learn their vocalizations, body language, social organization, ecology, and how people can better coexist with bears.
Courses are held at the Wildlife Research Institute located west of Ely, Minnesota. Participants (limited to a small class size of 8 or 9) are housed on site for maximum participation and total immersion in bears. All meals and accommodations are included. Participants will also enjoy exploring the Northwoods, learning about bear sign, identifying wild bear foods, visiting easily accessible bear dens, and taking a pontoon ride on Eagles Nest Lakes #1 and #2. Your course concludes with a visit to the North American Bear Center.

Read what Cindi from Montana had to say about her experience in 2025
“Full bear immersion. If you want to learn everything bear from the kindest, most knowledgeable bear experts on the planet, this is the trip for you. The team at WRI did a phenomenal job of creating an unforgettable experience. Not only are they great educators, but they also provided space for us to commune with the bears and get to know their individual behaviors and personalities. The highlight was spending time with Dr. Lynn Rogers and absorbing his wisdom, insight and stories. Truly a trip of a lifetime."
