Bears, Beavers, and Birds - UPDATE October 30, 2025
Missing the bears, I can imagine what Pete Seeger might sing in this situation: ‘Where have all the black bears gone? Most are sleeping. Where have all the black bears gone? Down in their dens.’ The last two bears caught on the cameras here were in the wee hours of October 20. Two days later one was caught on camera 4 ½ miles away at 3 AM, but nothing since.

The next day, a few snowflakes and the coldest day this fall might be what spurred beavers to get busy. I hadn’t seen a beaver for weeks, but suddenly three were crisscrossing the lake over and over, towing branches to build a food cache next to their lodge that is maybe a hundred feet from the WRI cabin.
Not to be forgotten, a deer looked up at me with beseeching eyes (top) that made me sprinkle peanuts to her from the second floor deck as her fawns heard what I was doing and came out of the bushes to join her.
Out the window was a raccoon ready for Halloween with a mask provided by mother nature.

For color, blue jays and goldfinches in winter plumage are doing their part.
