Snow, Balsam, and the Raven Pair - UPDATE December 14, 2022
Yesterday, out the window, a red squirrel started the day with a balsam fir branchlet instead of the peanut buffet that I thought they liked so much. It held the branchlet where I could see it and seemed to be saying, “I scurry up and down balsam trees trimming branchlets like this that you think I get just for the tiny bud on the tip, but you can see the bud is already bitten off and I’m still eating from the middle where there are only needles, so figure this one out” and it left before I could see any more.

Today came the forecast blizzard and the raven pair sitting together in their little area across the yard at 12:20 PM when I don’t usually see them together. Maybe the four inches of snow in just a few hours was an excuse for a little together break.
During a break in the snow, blue jays flocked to the peanut buffet spot and probed down through the snow for peanuts like this one has in its beak.
