Woodchuck and Scary Beasts - UPDATE April 16, 2022

WoodchuckWoodchuckThe woodchuck solved a mystery today. I believe it is the one that carried leaves into a burrow a few days ago, but this time giving a photo that shows it is not one of the two seen earlier. The one I was confused with is the one shown earlier with one upper front tooth. The one today has two front teeth—and it knows us. It came up on the second floor deck for broccoli and continued eating undisturbed as I clicked this picture through the window. I suspect it is the female who raised a litter here a couple years ago, which fits with her carrying leaves into the burrow for bedding.

The redpolls were here in number again and again flew off whenever a scary beast like a raven, a crow, or this eagle flew too close. A fast-moving squirrel has the same effect, but they now tolerate a red squirrel only 3 feet away that is doing no more than sitting eating in one spot. A slow-moving old human easing out the door is even less scary, and those that do fly off come back if he stands still. Redpolls are known for being fairly accepting of humans.
