With temperatures 29°F warmer than a couple days ago, I arrived in time to look for frosted feathers on the fluttering flock of siskins at sunrise. No frost. It was -9°F instead of -38°F.

I read something I didn’t know. They don’t tuck their heads under their wings like I thought. They tuck their heads into their back feathers, which explains why the frost is on their back like we’ve been seeing as well as on their heads. But today, the same bird species that had frost when it was cold were frost free.
