Marten, Interns - UPDATE December 5, 2016

I’ve been worried lately, not seeing any martens with the trapping season running from November 28 to December 5. I don’t know where she’s been,Pine marten femalePine marten female but the female marten showed up this morning as it was getting light at 7:55 AM. She went right to the date mash. It was light enough to get a silhouette picture. Brightened my day.

On the snow, I thought I was snapping a picture of a spider being active with the temperature right at freezing. It’s an insect—six legs. I can’t find this insect in any book. If anyone knows what this is, please let me know.

Interns, along with Bear Educators, have become very important to the Bear Center. We started out with one intern, some years ago. He was so good we hired him for the next summer. We went to four, then six, and now eight interns that we hope to get for 2017—six for the summer, two for the fall. The team put together this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=31o4Zi3R_lc to show what interns do and how to become involved. What kind of bug is this? What kind of insect is this? Each intern gets a stipend to defray expenses. It’s hard to think how an intern could get better experience and professional development than at the Bear Center with the variety of things that they do plus speaking to the public in person and with microphones. If you know someone going into wildlife, biology, ecology, or related fields; please share this link and video with him or her. Past interns have been very enthusiastic in their evaluations of their experience at the Bear Center as shown in the video. If you are as slow a reader as I am, you might want to hit the pause button a few times to read the longer testimonials. Deadlines for applications are February 10 for the summer internships and May 1 for the fall internships.

Thank you for all you do.
