Settling In - UPDATE August 28, 2016
It was an interesting day at the Bear Center. Curator Sharon Herrell gives a rundown:
Tasha and Sharon Herrell
“This morning after the bears had breakfast Tasha sat by Ted's end of the den playing with the yellow duck. I walked up and she indicated she wanted a head rub which quickly turned into a play period. Tasha is gentle and likes to have her back rubbed and around her ears.
She left her den around 9:40 and came back by herself without Holly's help at 12:40. She was observed playing by herself with a small balsam near the daybed area.
During the 12:00 Behind-the-Scenes tour, we observed Holly digging about 15 feet from the cabin den. She was so engaged that she didn't bother to look up for several minutes. In the picture she is standing on the rock with dirt on her nose. The digging area is just below the rock. She then moved to the mound area. Visitors got a rare view of how bears dig dens as they heard and watched the dirt fly. They were amazed as Holly would sit and pant then disappear into a well dug hole.”
