Honey and Holly - UPDATE April 2, 2015
Forest after the rain - 2012Holly was looking for sprouts of grass near the new addition today, which is not far from the big white pine she uses for security. Honey guards the open area in front of the windows and blusters at Holly when she comes near that area.
Yesterday morning, Moe videotaped Scott and I talking about the new Habitat Exhibit in the Northwoods Ecology Hall that Lily Fans helped make https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ni9nayhCC1U
Today, for the Northwoods Ecology Hall, I did research on water in this part of the “Land of 10,000 Lakes.” Since precipitation exceeds evaporation in northern Minnesota, streams and rivers form. Local Ojibwe/Chippewa Native Americans called northern Minnesota “The Heart of Turtle Island” because this is where major rivers begin that carry water to the Arctic Ocean, Atlantic Ocean, and Gulf of Mexico.
Kawishiwi Falls - 2012Ely's biggest river, the Kawishiwi, begins at Kawishiwi Lake in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness, winds its way 67 miles to spectacular Kawishiwi Falls near Ely and then over 600 miles north to Hudson Bay. Kawishiwi means “River Full of Beaver Houses.” I noticed that a list of ways this unique word has been used includes a battleship named the USS Kawishiwi and a 1980 Wild Kingdom TV program “The Sleeping Bears of Kawishiwi” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QHK51fCX2kk. The Donna Bear in that program was named after the same Donna as the Donna Bear in the current study.
Thank you for all you do.
